Grandad

Cullie Sandy Jackson, Grandad, was born on this date in 1901. He was a tall slender man. Looking at his pictures from his early years until he passed away, he looked about the same weight.

Grandad was a "wolf" hunter. He spent many nights on the prairie as he called it, listening to his dogs chase wolves. I think most of my cousins went with him at some time, but I was too chicken to go.

He knew a lot about the stars, probably from spending so many nights under them. One time, Grammy, Grandad, Mama, Daddy, & I were going to Levelland to visit Gene & Helen. Daddy thought we were lost. Grandad told him we were going in the right direction because there was some star that was always in that direction. He was right.

Every spring I look for the first scissortail to arrive, because Grandad said it wouldn't freeze after they came. I always think of him when I'm looking for them.

My oldest daughter, Sandi, is named after him and Paula's son Cullie is also.

The picture was taken at a family reunion in 1972. It really is a rare pose of him. In most of his pictures he isn't looking at the camera. I guess that's where Julian gets his camera shyness from. Notice the cup of coffee in his hand. He loved strong black coffee!

Grandad had lots of animals. I remember he had a fox, peacocks, hogs, doves, cattle, and chickens. Oh, yeah, and he had his hound dogs. They were his garbage disposal. All the leftovers from meals were placed in a bucket & some kind of liquid was added & that's what they ate. I don't remember if it was milk or just water.

Grandad passed away February 26, 1976. I still miss him.

Illness

I think there is an illness going around and I think I have it. Double TB...Too Busy To Blog! The symptoms are infrequent blog entries, no pictures, no comments, slower traffic on site meter. I'm not sure why the media hasn't warned us of this illness...it spreads around.

Sorry for the lack of posting, but really haven't even turned the computer on at home since Sunday & only then for Grandkids! Work has been really busy. We are scanning all the old divorce files and there are several things in these I will post about later. I know you can't wait, can you?

I'll try to post more later. Stay tuned!

Just Hangin' Around

I came home from work last week and Behm's jeans were hanging on the fence by the garden. My first thought was it was hot, but not that hot. Then I thought maybe the fire ants had gotten in his pants & he had pulled them off. Actually he had crude oil all over them. He had taken them off & put them on the porch, but they smelled so bad he put them on the fence. I told him not to let me forget to take them to the cleaners & this was his gentle reminder!

Happy 4th!

Happy 4th of July everyone! My July 4th holidays have changed quite a bit since the girls were younger. We always went to Six Flags over Texas every year on the 4th. It was never crowded and we always had a fun time!

This year, I will be working in the garden, putting up vegetables, and maybe go to Joy for the Fire Department Hot Dog supper. Everyone brings their own fireworks and the fire trucks are ready to put out any fires the fireworks might cause. Safer than everyone all around the community starting fires & having to chase those down.

Enjoy & celebrate!

Burning Money

Sunday afternoon lightning struck this oil tank and started a grass fire a few miles away. We were in the garden & didn't hear the page (the weather was fine here). 30 minutes later the Joy VFD called needing help. I grabbed my camera hoping to get some good pictures. After Behm helped put out the grass fire, we went to the tank fire. When we left it was out. About 30 minutes later, the tank on the right side in the picture caught fire & blew the top off of it.

Lots of money up in smoke, but the lives of firefighters are more precious than money.
