Tearing Down

The revitalization project is under way. Not sure what's going to happen, but they are doing something.

Hitchhikers

This grasshopper hitched a ride to work. He stayed there for a long way, but finally lost his footing.

Yesterday morning while driving to work, a cow was walking along the highway. I stopped to see if she needed a ride. She came running. I drove down the road and she followed a while but finally decided it wasn't worth the effort and stopped. I turned around and got back on the highway hoping she wouldn't follow me. She was a little large to ride on the hood of the pickup.

Antique Fan, Never Used

This is in one of the restrooms in the courthouse. I think it's some sort of fan. What I can't figure out is how it was supposed to work. There are no electrical plugs in that room at all!

Herd Burgers

Sometimes at work we get strange phone calls. Last week a man called & asked if Herd's was still open, what time they closed & if they still did not have a phone. He was driving from PK Lake.

They are closed on Sunday & Monday, close at 4:00 (I think) & do not have a phone. If anyone is looking for a great hamburger and are in the Jacksboro area, Herd burgers are worth the drive!

Unplanned Results

Sometimes the pictures I take don't turn out the way I planned. On the side of the freeway in Wichita Falls are concrete castings of bikers to depict the Hotter 'n Hell Hundred race they have every year and I love the imagery of them. As I drove by, I clicked away. This one isn't what I planned, but much better! It looks as though the bikers are flying past me!

Garden Update

We plowed the garden under a few weeks ago. With all the rain we've had, we have black eye peas growing again! Don't know if they'll make it to harvest before it gets too cold and not really sure I want them to.

Floats

The following photos are courtesy of Presley. I think she took a picture of every entry.

This one is a little blurry, but it was neat because it was a replica of the courthouse with the fire escape slide (which was taken down a few years ago) with a Barbie doll sliding down. Several people were upset because it was removed, but I was a little relieved because Grandkids sliding down the slide makes one nervous grandparent.

The winning floats were amazing as usual. Every year they get better. My photos (which only one pictured was a winner) do not capture the details or beauty, but there are some truly talented people who design and put these together.

You can read more about this annual event & see photos of last year's parade here.

Pioneer Reunion 2009

The arena is empty, reflecting on the last 3 days and glad all that weight is off them at last!

Boots and hats were the fashion of the day and horses were the mode of transportation.

Even Elvis and the cheerleaders wore boots!

With all the horse poop around, boots were a necessity instead of a fashion statement!

Clay County Pioneer Reunion

The cowboys are getting ready...

almost time for the grand entry...

the horses are ready...

Clay County's 78th Pioneer Reunion kicks off today! 3 days of horses, floats, horses, rodeo, horses, music, and did I mention horses. I think Clay County has more horses than any county in Texas. Everybody shows up to ride in the parades and grand entry every year. Except me, I'm afraid of horses!

Fight at Auction

Saturday Behm & I went to an auction in Newcastle. It was in a building so the rain wasn't a problem. While going through all the treasures looking for the ones I couldn't live without, I saw it! There was a big box on the floor that was closed and I know I have to dig to find the really good stuff. When I opened it, it was full of Playboy magazines from the '70's.

I kept my eye on that box all day making sure no one moved it to the front without me knowing it. Finally near the end of the auction, we all moved to the table that had the box.

Miss Buy Everything at the auction told me she was going to buy the magazines. When the magazines came up for bid, she said she wanted them & dared every man in there to bid against her. They started the auction & I bid first. She looked at me like I had thrown cold water on her. She bid & 3 more women including me bid at the same time. I thought she was going to die. "Are you kidding me?", she asked and bid again. I bid again, she was shocked but bid again. I immediately nodded my head again. She said, "Let's share them". I smiled and told her no. She was incredulous by this time but bid again. Long story short...I am now the proud owner of a box of Playboy magazines. Hope they do well on eBay!

Pioneer Reunion

Clay County Pioneer Reunion is this weekend and even our porch is getting ready. This wet spot has been like this for 2 days. Don't you think it looks like a horse?

Hoo's Here

The last 3 mornings & evenings this guy has been sitting on our yard fence. It's always too dark to take his picture, but I tried.

This is a terrible picture, but it was the best I could get at night, from a distance.

We don't seem to bother him, he just sits there. I'm not sure what he's after. I'm hoping it's the bugs under the light and not mice or snakes, but if he carries them off that would be great!

New Pet

This little guy showed up about a week ago and is still here. Our first meeting was a little exciting.

I was sitting on the front porch (okay I was smoking) when I saw him. His head was peeking out from the side of the house. I jumped up and yelled for Behm to come kill this snake. Behm came to the door and he couldn't see him. Finally after putting on his glasses, he did see him, but we couldn't figure out how we were going to shoot him without destroying the house. While I bravely kept my eyes on him, Behm got a flashlight and we saw it wasn't a snake, but Kermit.

In my defense, it was 5:00 A.M., still dark, and my eyes weren't adjusted very well yet. It could have been a snake. Anyway, it got the old hearts pumping!

Garden's End

Empty baskets and full freezer! August 31 was the last day I picked anything out of the garden. It is now plowed under waiting for next February. I had many hours of labor, bug bites, back aches, tanned legs (for the first time in years), and tons more pleasure and satisfaction than I thought I would. It was a good thing!

Old & New

I wonder if this building feels the same way I do when trying to deal with new technology? I know enough to get by, but things move so fast now I have a hard time keeping up. When I first started to work I had never typed on an electric typewriter and didn't know how to turn it on. I taught myself how to use an old computer by reading the manual and now I am writing things the whole world can read. Not that I have a world wide following, but it could happen. I appreciate all the followers I do have and enjoy hearing from you. Thanks for reading little snippets of my mind!

Turn Out the Lights

The party's over or in this case parties. We've been celebrating birthdays for the past 3 weeks. First was a surprise party for Behm's Mother at Wichita Falls, then to Joshua to celebrate Tally's & Presley's, Friday was dinner for Behm & his Uncle Jim at Buffalo Springs, & Sunday was Daddy's at my house. Family, food, and laughter...a great way to celebrate birthdays!

Old Memories

The storm siren was being tested the other day at work & every time I hear it I am reminded of how things used to be. When there was a fire, the siren blew to call the firemen. One time meant city, two county, or it might have been the other way around. Now every one has a pager or radio to call them to action.

It also sounded at noon and that's when the entire courthouse closed for lunch. Most of the offices still close at lunch, but I guess we have a built-in timer of when it is noon...or we watch the clock more than we used to!

Winner!

Rise and Shine News Update

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

bgfdwf3@... is today's Fried Pie Winner.

I'm a winner!! Behm called this morning & heard on the radio I had won.

The Rise and Shine show is on 1290 AM 6-8 in the morning & I had signed up months ago for the newsletter. Hadn't thought about winning in a while, but today was my lucky day! 1/2 dozen fried pies to enjoy! Maybe I'll get lucky & win the mixer on Pioneer Woman next!

Wiped Out!

I went to the garden yesterday to pick tomatoes. Here's what I found!

These blister bugs have wiped them out and are working on the peppers now.

There were several worms on them too.

We picked all the green and ripe tomatoes, 3 squash, and the okra is gone also. It's been an enjoyable summer of picking & eating fresh vegetables. Only 5 or 6 more months and we can start all over again!
